Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the nation's oldest technological institute and a top-ranked private technological research university, seeks a highly accomplished leader to serve as the Director of the Center for Career and Professional Development. In May 2000, under the leadership of the Honorable Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D., the Board of Trustees of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute adopted The Rensselaer Plan, setting a bold course of action and signaling a new era in the distinguished history of the Institute. When The Rensselaer Plan was launched, it took the Institute into a new—and transformative—direction, with new priorities, strategic investments, and a vision of a university with global reach and global impact. A greatly enhanced research portfolio is the single most transformational objective of The Rensselaer Plan. As one of its highest priorities, Rensselaer is dramatically expanding the research enterprise by leveraging its existing strengths and focusing on five key signature thrusts: Bioscience, Bioengineering, and Biotechnology; Energy and the Environment; Nanotechnology; Computation and Information Technology; and Experimental Media and the Arts. With this new emphasis, research funding has dramatically increased, the faculty has been significantly expanded, student enrollment and quality are up, and an unprecedented faculty renewal and new construction continues. In 2009, Dr. Jackson and Rensselaer announced the successful conclusion of the largest capital campaign in the University's history, raising over $1.4 billion, having surpassed the ambitious goal of $1.4 billion in gifts and gift commitments, nine months ahead of schedule, exceeding all previous fund-raising at Rensselaer.

Programs and services such as career assistance; counseling, and testing; internship and fellowships; job listings; networking opportunities; on-campus interviewing and employer information sessions; and career and job fairs are provided to undergraduate students, graduate students and alumni of Rensselaer, and the five schools of the Institute. The Director will also oversee the strategic use of the Center's resources and budget in the expanding efforts to serve students.
