Why would I choose SJG as the firm to conduct this search?
Search firms generally specialize and there many fine search firms that work in higher education—SJG is part of this select group. We always recommend using a firm that has a track record of working within the higher education arena since this search process is very different from that of a typical corporate search. For example, the use of a search committee is integral to the process for a college or university but is almost unheard of in a corporate setting. Further, it is important to gather information from the firms you are considering and determine how many searches they have done within the professional area of the candidates you are seeking. An ethical search firm should either decline a search or be clear that the search is not within its area of strength or expertise.
How do I know a search firm is ethical?
An ethical search firm should be able to outline, in writing, its guarantee, off-limits policy, and fee structure. An ethical firm will be clear with you about who from the firm is handling the search and clearly outline their responsibilities in a detailed contract. Ethical firms all operate within applicable state and federal laws regarding hiring practices. Finally, a retained search firm does not represent, nor accept, compensation from a candidate. We work quickly to identify a pool of high-quality candidates for any position, using our extensive network along with our proprietary database. This can shorten the time frame considerably. However, every search is different and dependent on a number of factors that may fall outside our control. Rest assured that we share your sense of urgency and do everything within our power to ensure an efficient, effective search. Typically, however, our search process runs between three and four months from our first visit to campus to an offer to a successful candidate.
What kind of institutions do you serve?
Since our founding in 1991, we have worked with virtually every type of higher learning institution. Some of America's leading public, private, two-year, four-year, graduate, professional, women's, and religious institutions are among our valued clients. Please see our client list and references for more information.
What about confidentiality?
We respect the need for discretion and confidentiality among our clients and candidates. We will never disclose your information outside of the necessities of the search itself, and we will work with you to establish clear ground rules from the start.
Whose interests do you represent?
We represent the interests of the institution that retains us to perform a search. However, a successful search means delivering against the needs of both the client institution and individual candidates. Therefore, we approach every relationship—with both clients and candidates—with professionalism, respect, and honesty.
What geographical areas do you serve?
