Barbara M. Fienman, Ph.D. – Higher Education Consultant and Senior Advisor to the Board
Dr. Fienman is a student affairs professional with more than 30 years of experience in higher education administration. During her career, she has held full time positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Suffolk University (Massachusetts), Wentworth Institute of Technology (Massachusetts) and Mt. Ida College (Massachusetts), in the offices of residence life, student activities, and student affairs administration. Since 1995, Dr. Fienman has served in interim positions for colleges and universities that are seeking temporary assistance either due to a failed search or a mid-year vacancy. Dr. Fienman has served as an interim dean of students, registrar, dean of enrollment management, director of a career center, regional admissions counselor, financial aid counselor, director of student conduct, director of residence life, and director of international student services. Dr. Fienman received her bachelor’s in American history from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, an EdM from Boston University, and a PhD from Boston College. She is involved in a number of professional associations, including NASPA, ASCA, ACPA, and NAFSA, and is a frequent presenter on student discipline, legal issues, and professional development. Dr. Fienman has taught in the master’s degree programs at Salem State College (Massachusetts) and at Northeastern University (Massachusetts) as well as an adjunct faculty member in the Administration of Higher Education graduate programs at Suffolk University (Massachusetts).
Katherine Johnson Schneider – Senior Advisor to the Board
Kate Johnson Schneider received her BA in psychology and education from Dartmouth College and her MS Ed in higher education counseling from the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at the University of Rochester. She has a wide variety of professional experience in higher education and the private sector and is a founding partner of Spelman Johnson. Her primary responsibilities include technology strategy as well as ongoing support to the Spelman Johnson network.
Elizabeth Alden – Senior Advisor to the Board
Elizabeth “Betsy” Alden holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from SUNY Cortland, a master’s in sport history and sport philosophy from the University of Maryland, and a doctoral degree in athletic administration and sports studies from the University of Iowa. Now a division of Spelman Johnson, she founded Alden & Associates, a retained executive search and consulting firm serving intercollegiate athletics, in 1999. Prior to founding the firm, she served as the director of athletics for several intercollegiate athletics programs, including the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Webster University, San Francisco State University, and Ithaca College.
Betsy presented on intercollegiate athletics topics at conferences and conventions, including the NCAA. She also held leadership roles with a number of different national associations, serving on the Board of Advisors for both Athletic Management magazine and College Athletics and the Law. She is a past president of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators and was named by the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee’s Subcommittee on Champions of Diversity and Inclusion, as a 2015 Champion of Diversity and Inclusion.
