High-risk alcohol use prevention is the perennial health and safety concern for colleges. How do you know if you have the right prevention plan in place? How can you make the most of limited resources? The NCAA and NASPA created 360 Proof to help NCAA Division III and NASPA Small Colleges and Universities answer that question.
What is 360 Proof?
It is a free resource designed to reduce the consequences of alcohol use and enhance collaboration between athletics and student affairs.
360 Proof is primarily a planning tool, where colleges are guided through best practice steps to understand campus alcohol use, set and prioritize goals and objectives, and select and implement evidence-based strategies. It also creates a network to connect prevention experts with campus practitioners, provides training for coaches to communicate with student-athletes about alcohol, and provides an online intervention for students to reflect on the impact and consequences of their alcohol-related behavior.
In addition to reducing the consequences of high-risk alcohol use, 360 Proof creates opportunities for collaboration between athletics and student affairs. Student affairs has expertise on prevention and programming, and these efforts are most successful when addressed by the entire institution. The Division III philosophy says that student-athletes should be integrated into the institution, which is also a practical necessity for many small colleges with limited resources.
While 360 Proof is most effective when implemented as a comprehensive program, there are several features that can be used independently. Doing these three things can bring positive behavior change to your campus, and introduce you to the 360 Proof program:
- Have students (all students, not just student-athletes) use the 360 Proof Personalized Feedback Index (PFI). This is a confidential tool, accessible from any web-enabled device, that presents to students the impact and consequences of their alcohol-related behavior. It also offers practical strategies for reducing the negative consequences of high-risk alcohol use. Studies show the PFI can have a significant effect on students’ alcohol use, reducing the total number of drinks consumed per week, frequency of alcohol use after one month and frequency of drinking after one year. - Have all coaches watch the 360 Proof Coaches modules. These three to five minute videos include insights into alcohol-related behavior and consequences, and strategies for communicating with student-athletes in a manner that engenders trust, confidence, and accountability. You can watch them in a coaching staff meeting, or assign for individual viewing.

Leah Kareti is a contract employee of the NCAA who manages 360 Proof, a joint venture between the NCAA and NASPA (Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education) offering the program ‘360 Proof’. She runs two national professional development events for Division III, the Athletics Direct Report Institute and the Faculty Athletics Representatives Institute. She recently completed an initiative to develop infrastructure for the Student-Athlete Knowledge Community, a NASPA entity launched in 2013 to empower student affairs professionals with knowledge about athletics and the unique needs of student-athletes to enhance cross-campus collaboration and the collegiate experience for all students. Kareti serves as principal for the consulting firm, 3 Fold Group, and also serves as adjunct faculty at Castleton University, teaching ‘Athletics Governance and Compliance’ in the M.S. Program in Athletic Leadership.
Prior to the contract role, Kareti spent more than 10 years at the NCAA national office with roles including director of Division III Governance and leading the Division III legislative and interpretive team in Membership Services (now Academic and Membership Affairs). She started her professional career in research and development with General Mills. Kareti holds a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University where she was a track and cross country student-athlete and member of the Big Ten and NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committees, and she holds an MBA from Indiana University.
