At The Cabinet Level: General Management

As a senior/cabinet level officer of your institution, the expectation from your president and your board is that while representing your particular division, you are also able to effectively contribute in all other institutional areas, as well as articulate the challenges and goals facing your institution and the larger academic market.

Below is a broad overview of important institutional metrics for General Management.  As a senior/cabinet level officer, it is key to be familiar with:

  • Know your board of trustees/board of governors
  • Know your president’s priorities
  • Know the state legislators that are most connected to higher education or sit on a higher education committee
  • Be able to articulate the overall condition of higher education in your region/state
  • Possess a sense of the issues facing all of higher education nationally—funding, financial aid, state support, outcomes, graduation rates, costs/return on investment
  • Possess a general understanding of Federal issues and the competitive issues facing U.S. higher education in global market
  • A clear understanding of emergency protocols at your institution
  • Know your board of trustees/board of governors
  • Know the state legislators that are most connected to higher education or that sit on the higher education committee

Mark Hall

Vice President - Spelman Johnson

Mark Hall earned his BA from Wake Forest University, his MEd from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and his MBA from the University of Central Florida. Most recently, Mark served as president of Campus Entertainment, LLC, a subsidiary company of the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA). During a career that spans over 20 years in higher education, Mark has served as assistant executive director at NACA, vice president for finance and administration at Columbia College, and director of the university centers at both Wake Forest University and the University of Central Florida. He served two terms as vice-chair of the NACA board of directors and was president of the Southern Region of the National Association of College Auxiliary Services.
