Donald Reed

Director of Athletics

Dr. Donald R. Reed was named Director of Athletics at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) on June 17, 2020. Prior to his arrival at PVAMU, Reed joined the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York, as the Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services in the fall of 2007. In 2010, he was promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Director for Athletic & Academic Performance.

In his current role, Dr. Reed served as a member of the executive team and is the sport administrator for the Women’s Basketball and Wrestling programs.  In addition, he provides administrative support to the Football and Men’s Basketball programs.  In 2012, Reed created the Center for Excellence in Athletic and Academic Performance, which includes Sports Medicine, Sports Performance, Student-Athlete Excellence, Academic Services, Nutrition Services, Mental and Emotional Health & Wellness and Career Development.

During his time at UB, he has been in a leadership role throughout this unprecedented run of athletic success & academic performance of our student-athletes. UB student-athletes have recorded an average GPA of at least a 3.0 for 13 consecutive semesters. Prior to Reed’s arrival, the average GPA had never exceeded a 3.0 in any semester.  We have won a historic 13 conference championships and made three Division I FBS bowl game appearances. In addition, UB Athletics was the recipient of the 2018 NCAA/MOAA Award for Diversity and Inclusion.

Reed came to UB after spending seven years at Iowa State University where he was the Associate Athletic Director for Academic and Student Services. He directed and supervised all aspects of the academic support, personal development and career development for the Cyclone Athletic Department.

Prior to arriving at Iowa State, he spent two years as the Manager of Academic Development Programs at Arizona State University, and seven years as the Academic Program Coordinator for Athletics at New Mexico State University. He is a graduate of the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing/Management where he was a student-athletes on the Mean Green basketball team. He also earned a Master of Science in Kinesiology/Education and Sport Administration from UNT.

In 1999, Reed received his Doctor of Philosophy in Education Management and Development from New Mexico State University. Dr. Reed and his wife Megan have three children; daughter Maia, and sons Donovan and Miles.
