Erica O’Neal Howard
Associate Dean of Students
Dr. Erica O’Neal Howard is the new Associate Dean of Students at the University of the South. She has over 25 years of experience serving students in higher education. Erica has worked in a variety of leadership roles, including as an Assistant Vice President at Caltech and as the Senior Associate Dean of Students at Occidental College. Interested in the holistic development of students in a pluralistic world, Dr. O’Neal Howard has made various professional contributions to develop future leaders. These include founding the Stanford Summer Engineering Academy for women and underrepresented minority students; re-engineering the undergraduate admissions process at Caltech to increase the number of women and minorities; creating an interdisciplinary care team at Occidental to better support all students; supporting the development of a formal veterans program at Occidental; and partnering with local psychologists to test and offer some low-cost services to Occidental College students with disabilities. She also established Oxy’s first threat assessment team. Erica holds a Ph.D. and M.S. from the University of Pennsylvania in Higher Education and a BA from Harvard University in Romance Languages and Literatures. When not working, Erica can be found trail running, hiking, and trying to keep up with her daughter.
