Markesha Henderson

Director of Athletics

Markesha M. Henderson was introduced as director of athletics at Agnes Scott College in January 2020.

Dr. Markesha McWilliams Henderson contributes to the discovery, application, and delivery of knowledge with specific expertise in the intersection of higher education and intercollegiate athletics administration. Dr. Henderson presents a unique combination of experiences to inform her work including experience as a former Division I All-American Track and Field Athlete and National Champion. Before entering the academy as a sport management professor, she acquired over 10 years of executive experience in the sports industry including serving as Director of Communications for the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NCAA Division II) and Assistant Commissioner/SWA for the Southwestern Athletic Conference (NCAA Division I). 

She most recently served as Associate Professor of Business Administration and Director of the Center for Innovative Teaching, Learning and Engagement at Clark Atlanta University. In that role, she supports the professional development of all CAU faculty, specifically with creating engaging classroom experiences using digital learning tools and course redesign for online platforms. Prior to CAU, Dr. Henderson was the program coordinator for the Bachelor of Science in Sport Management program and developed a fully-online Master of Science in Sport Management at the University of West Georgia. Under her leadership, the program experienced an increase in enrollment of 600%, was awarded the College of Education Program of the Year and was nominated for the University System of Georgia Teaching Excellence Award. She currently supports the CAU School of Business with course redesign, faculty development, and student career development and exploration. 

Her academic work promotes co-curricular learning and she has developed dozens of successful experiential partnerships to provide students with opportunities with major sports brands including Mercedes Benz Stadium, Talladega Superspeedway, and the Atlanta Braves. She continues to extend her leadership and expertise to many sport organizations including commissioned research for the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and the 2019 Atlanta Super Bowl Host Committee. 
She earned a Doctor of Education in Higher Education Administration from The George Washington University, a Master of Science in Sports Administration from Georgia State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Communication Arts from the University of Wisconsin.
