Director of Athletics
Sharief Hashim was named Director of Athletics at Susquehanna University in May 2020. Hashim provides visionary leadership, supervision and management to support the academic and athletic success of students in concert with the university’s mission and strategic priorities. Hashim is responsible for a department consisting of 23 varsity sports, over 70 professional coaches and staff, over 600 student athletes and a $3.1 million budget.
Prior to joining SU, Sharief spent two years the Director of Athletics and Physical Education at SUNY Potsdam. He joined the Bears after serving in the same capacity at Southern Vermont College in Bennington.
A member of senior leadership and student affairs at Potsdam, Hashim was responsible for operations, including financial and business functions. In addition to sport oversight and department master planning, he ensured compliance with the NCAA, State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), Northeast Women’s Hockey League (NEWHL), Empire 8 and North East Atlantic (NEAC) Conferences. Additional responsibilities include physical education curriculum development, enrollment management and retention of student athletes.
Hashim was appointed the interim director of athletics at Southern Vermont in October 2016, before having the interim tag removed in July 2017. As AD, he oversaw internal and external compliance to college policies and NCAA rules and regulations. Hashim also managed department staffing, budgets and NCAA grants. In addition, he was a member of senior leadership and collaborated with other campus administrators on enrollment management and diversity and inclusion initiatives.
Prior to serving as AD, Hashim held multiple roles at Southern Vermont. He originally joined the staff as junior varsity men’s basketball coach, athletics liaison and admissions counselor in April 2013. During the 2016-17 season, he also served as interim head women’s basketball coach.
Hashim is a graduate of the 2016 NCAA Division III Institute for Administrative Advancement, a professional development program for mid-level ethnic minority athletic administrators. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA) and the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA). Hashim is a 2008 graduate of Columbia Union College and holds a bachelor’s degree in organizational management with a minor in counseling psychology. He earned his master’s in athletic administration from Southern New Hampshire University in 2016.
