The Other Side of Campus: Collaboration Between Student Affairs and Athletics

Vice Presidents for Student Affairs are charged with navigating complex processes, programs, and initiatives that support the success of all students regardless of demographics, culture, or background. Across campus student athletes frequently navigate their collegiate experience in an environment that is very different from their peers. Student athletes experience the same issues that non-student athletes face across throughout their college tenure. Athletic departments generally provide resources and services to support student athletes in areas as diverse as dining, registration, academic advising, and judicial affairs. When student affairs and athletics are collaborative partners the outcomes for all student are improved. This program will bring together student affairs and athletic administrators to identify and explore ways to collaborate and navigate best practices for the success and integration of student athletes. The panel of presenters includes:

Ellen Heffernan

President - Spelman Johnson

Ellen Heffernan graduated from Smith College with a B.A. in economics and government. She joined Spelman Johnson in 1996, after a ten-year career in higher education that included positions at Smith College and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is also a national speaker and writer on topics related to recruiting and professional development in higher education and serves as faculty for several national higher education association professional development programs. Ellen also currently serves on the executive board of the National Association of Executive Recruiters.
