Position Description

Reporting to the Director and serving on the Carruth Center for Psychological and Psychiatric Services (CCPPS) leadership team, the Training Director (TD) contributes to strategic planning of the clinical and administrative functions of the Center’s psychological, psychiatric, counseling, outreach, consultation, and training services/programs, and oversees the development and implementation of clinical training programs and policies. The TD oversees the annual recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of doctoral interns, graduate assistants, practicum students, psychiatry residents, and other trainees within the Center and the satellite operations. This position is responsible for maintaining adherence to American Psychological Association (APA) accreditation standards; organizing and facilitating the Training Committee; developing and approving all agency clinical supervision assignments; actively promoting multicultural competence and awareness in both training and the broader Center operations and culture; and providing culturally sensitive clinical supervision to interns, trainees, and early career staff. In conjunction with the center leadership team, the TD develops and supervises a postdoctoral fellowship program. The TD also collaborates with the CCPPS Director and Clinical Director to provide administration, strategic planning, policy development and implementation, quality assurance, grant writing, and program evaluation.

Qualifications

A completed doctoral degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology (PhD, EdD, or PsyD) from an APA-accredited program. Required experience includes: five years of experience providing clinical services in a university counseling service or other related counseling setting (3 years post licensure); three years of experience providing training and clinical supervision to graduate trainees or staff; a minimum of 800 hours supervised practicum in providing psychological services, including adult outpatient individual counseling/therapy, group psychotherapy, and assessment; and one year, full-time pre-doctoral internship in an APA-accredited Professional Psychology program that includes a primary rotation in adult outpatient counseling/therapy and counseling. Must be licensed (or license-eligible within six months) within the State of West Virginia.

Additional skills required include: experience with APA accredited internship programs and supervision experience with doctoral interns and graduate students; experience providing short-term counseling/psychotherapy; experience with crisis intervention; demonstrated commitment to the principles of cultural humility-based counseling; excellent leadership, organizational, management, and communication skills; commitment and ability to promote and enhance diversity, including development of multicultural competence in training and the broader center operations and culture; ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, accrediting bodies, and/or other various agencies for the implementation of the training program. Ability to work successfully as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team; knowledge, skills, and expertise required to proficiently conduct, document, and evaluate individual, and group psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and consultation/outreach with a college-aged population are also required.

History of the Position

This position has been vacant since June 2020, and currently is being filled by an interim training director. The position has produced training directors who have had strong experience and longevity at WVU prior to assuming counseling center director roles at other institutions including Ohio University, Carnegie Mellon, and Oregon State University.

Departmental Leadership

Anne Hawkins, Director of the Carruth Center for Psychological and Psychiatric Services

As director, T. Anne Hawkins is responsible for the strategic planning and administrative functions of the Center’s psychological, psychiatric, counseling, consultation, and training services/programs which meet the behavioral needs of WVU students both in the Center and at various satellite centers. Hawkins joined WVU in 2009 as the clinical director, prior to being named as director in 2020. Before joining the Center, Hawkins worked in Student Affairs leading retention and LGBTQ/Social Justice related initiatives, private practice, and as a visiting/adjunct faculty member. Hawkins is a licensed psychologist in the state of West Virginia. Hawkins earned her BS degree, MS degree, and her PhD in Counseling Psychology from West Virginia University.

Likely Opportunities, Priorities, and Challenges of the Position

The new director of training will follow a legacy of strong clinicians with exceptional organizational skills, a passion for recruiting and developing new practitioners in the field, and a commitment to best practices for student mental health. The director of training requires an individual who is clinically astute, possesses a deep understanding of today’s students and their developmental needs, and is equipped to lead at both a strategic and operational level within a large public research institution.

The Carruth Center (Center) stakeholders were engaged and invested in dialogue around the current vacancy, and they spoke consistently of identifying an individual who would provide leadership and vision for the future continued success of the Center and the internship program.

Additional challenges and opportunities for the training director as articulated by stakeholders are as follows:

  • The new director of training will work at an institution where student mental health is an institutional priority shown by a true commitment to resources and projected growth for the Center that partners with the academic mission of the institution.
  • The successful candidate will provide leadership in recruitment of interns to a geographic location that may not be as attractive as a more urban environment through the promotion of the broad experiences that WVU interns receive.
  • The new director of training will balance the individualized academic needs of interns with the expanding needs of the students that are served through the Center.

Institutional Background

West Virginia University is a public institution that was founded in 1867. The University operates on a semester-based academic calendar. West Virginia University is located along the Monongahela River in the small city of Morgantown in the northern part of the state. The suburban campus setting encompasses 2,800 acres.

Gordon Gee, President, West Virginia University

Dr. E. Gordon Gee is one of America’s most prominent higher education leaders, having helmed universities for more than three decades. In 2009, Time magazine named him one of the top 10 university presidents in the United States. Recently, the website Great Value Colleges named him the nation’s top university president.

In 2014, Gee returned to West Virginia University, where his career as a university president began. His leadership goals include putting students first, advancing the university’s research agenda, partnering with West Virginia communities, and making sure that 1.8 million West Virginians know in their hearts and minds that West Virginia University is their university.

Born in Vernal, Utah, Gee graduated from the University of Utah with an honors degree in history and earned his JD and EdD degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief Justice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this role, he worked for Chief Justice Warren Burger on administrative and legal problems of the Court and federal judiciary. Gee returned to Utah as an associate professor and associate dean in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University and was granted full professorship in 1978.

One year later, he became dean of the West Virginia University College of Law, and, in 1980, was named West Virginia University president. He served in that role until 1985.

Gee went on to lead the University of Colorado (1985-1990), Brown University (1998-2000), and Vanderbilt University (2001-2007). He served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990 to 1997 and again from 2007 to 2013.

Gee has been a member of several education-governance organizations and committees including the Big 12 Conference Council of Presidents, the Business-Higher Education Forum, and the American Association of Universities. He was chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education Attainment and served as co-chair of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities’ Energy Advisory Committee. In 2009, Gee was invited to join the International Advisory Board of King Adbulaziz University in Saudi Arabia, and he currently serves on the Board of the Royal University for Women in Bahrain.

Active in a number of national professional and service organizations during his tenures, he has served on the boards for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Inc., Limited Brands, and the National 4-H Council. In 2011, Gee was appointed to serve as secretary on the Board of Directors of Ohio’s economic development program, JobsOhio. In 2011-2012, he was asked by Governor Kasich to chair both the Ohio Higher Education Capital Funding Collaborative and the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission. In March 2015, he was elected to the board of directors of the American Council on Education, the nation’s largest higher education organization. And he served as chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors Executive Committee for the 2017-18 year. Gee presently serves on the council of presidents for the Southern University Research Association.

Gee has received a number of honorary degrees, awards, fellowships and recognitions. He is a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science organization. In 1994, Gee received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah, as well as from Teachers College of Columbia University. In 2013, he received the ACE Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor Award and received the Outstanding Academic Leader of the Year Award on behalf of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He is the co-author of over a dozen books, including his two most recent, “Leading Colleges and Universities” and “Land-Grant Universities for the Future.”
