The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a comprehensive urban university with a nationally recognized academic health center. UAB is the only public, four-year degree granting university in the state’s largest metropolitan area. UAB is the largest research institution in the state of Alabama, and the University is the largest employer in Birmingham. In fall of 2017, 574 new students enrolled in the UAB Honors College, bringing the enrollment to over 1,800. In 2017, the University had its eighth year of overall record enrollment, with over 20,900 undergraduate, graduate, pre-professional, and post-doctoral students. Nearly 70 percent of the student body attends the University full-time, and more than 73 percent of the freshmen live on campus. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Services in the Division of Student Affairs, the Director of Student Media oversees a broad portfolio of responsibilities that support an institutional focus on student success and excellence in teaching, learning, and research. The director provides overall vision and leadership for the Department of Student Media, which includes editorially and artistically independent student-centered content produced through newspaper (Kaleidoscope), literary (Aura), internet radio (BlazeRadio), multimedia (UABTV), and other platforms. The director provides strategic leadership by creating a vision for the growth and development of the department, fosters a culture of journalistic excellence across all mediums, and promotes visionary innovation within Student Media utilizing cutting-edge technology and leading best practices. The director manages the educational experience of the students involved in the various mediums, providing leadership training and development, promoting awareness of media law and ethics, providing experiential learning opportunities, and developing new experiences to prepare and qualify students for post-graduate employment. The director promotes collaboration and relationships with academic and administrative entities on campus, as well as media outlets and businesses in the Birmingham community. The director manages a budget of over $300,000, and supervises one (1) professional staff and a student staff of fifty (50).
A master’s degree in journalism, communication, higher education, public administration, management, college student personnel, or other relevant field, with several years of progressively responsible full-time related experience, is highly preferred. Previous experience in a collegiate student media environment, as well as experience in a professional medium, is also desired. The successful candidate should possess strong organizational abilities, the ability to build a cohesive team, and excellent written/oral communication skills. An understanding of student development and leadership theory and its impact on practice is valuable. A demonstrated commitment to diversity and customer service, as well as the ability to foster strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, is desirable. Flexibility of schedule when working with students and media production is important.
