The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee invites nominations and applications for its next vice chancellor for marketing and communications. This is an on-site and in-person role, and the anticipated start date is November/December 2022.

The Position

Reporting directly to the Chancellor and serving as a member of his executive leadership team, the vice chancellor for marketing and communications (VCMC) is the chief executive and administrative officer for the planning and execution of all actions and initiatives for integrated marketing and communication, web, print and copy, and brand strategy. They will develop a comprehensive and proactive university-wide marketing, communication, and branding strategy that supports UWM’s 2030 Action Plan initiatives, strategic directions, guiding values, and aspirations. This campus leader works collaboratively with UWM leadership and campus stakeholders to advance the university’s reputation and brand, achieve revenue growth for the university, ensure maximum effectiveness of marketing strategy and investments, and secure financial and other resources. The VCMC serves as an administrative liaison to the University of Wisconsin System on system-led initiatives and to community and external groups on initiatives related to communications, marketing, brand management, and other related topics.

The VCMC leads, develops, and implements strategies for communicating with external constituencies, marketing to prospective students, devising internal communications that support a cohesive and well-informed university community, and overseeing the marketing partnerships with professional sports teams and other regional partners to advance UWM’s brand and reputation. The position works closely and is aligned with the divisions of academic affairs and enrollment management on marketing efforts to maximize demand for the university’s educational programs and drive student enrollment. The VCMC is responsible for measuring the effectiveness of all strategies by setting clear performance indicators and, ultimately, meeting or exceeding them.

This position leads a division comprising approximately 50 staff members, including six direct reports, and oversees a budget of approximately $4.5 million. The marketing and communications division at UWM includes the following units: executive communications, integrated marketing and communications, print and copy services, web and mobile services, and shared marketing services.

Minimum requirements for the position include a bachelor’s degree and five years of successful and progressively responsible leadership in a senior management role within a large and complex organization that serves diverse populations, including experience in strategic communications, brand marketing, or public relations across multiple media platforms. An advanced degree and evidence of administrative leadership experience within a large higher education institution or system are preferred.

The search and screen committee is particularly interested in candidates who have a history of success in leading strategic and data-informed organizational transformations; understand emerging and evolving trends in higher education, marketing, communications, and brand management; and have a consistent record of coalition-building and collaboration with diverse groups of organizational stakeholders.
