The Position

ROLE OF THE POSITION

As the chief student affairs officer of a comprehensive, multi-location community college, the vice president for student engagement, inclusion and success (VPSEIS) leads and fosters an environment where student development and learning is approached from a lens of holistic and inclusive student support. Reporting to the CEO/president and in partnership with a committed, professional team of administrators, the VPSEIS facilitates collaboration throughout the college community to enhance student access, inclusion, retention, and completion. The VPSEIS is the key individual responsible for developing and implementing both near-term and long-term plans for the student support departments. The position will have close day-to-day interaction with CEO/president’s cabinet colleagues, dean of students, student leadership and development, financial aid, enrollment management, and the student success center. The VPSEIS will provide vision, broad oversight, and leadership for the following services: financial aid, pathways advising, Center for Diversity & Inclusion, disability services, recruitment and enrollment services, student transitions, student counseling, student activities and leadership, and TRIO Student Support Services. The VPSEIS has the responsibility and authority to make decisions related to division strategic initiatives; develop policy, procedures, and practices that support efficiency and quality of programs and services; and work with division staff, vice president for academic affairs, academic deans, administrators, and other college constituents to develop and implement initiatives that support and advance student learning and success. The VPSEIS will assess outcomes to evaluate progress and promote continuous improvement and will accomplish this work with logic and ethics, passion and creativity, patience, and a sense of humor. The VPSEIS will provide direct supervision to the following: assistant vice president for student engagement, inclusion and success, dean of students, executive director of financial aid, executive director of enrollment management, and VPSEIS staff executive. The VPSEIS will have financial and budgetary responsibility for an estimated budget of $6 million. The salary range for this position is $$138-$153K.

Additional duties and responsibilities of the vice president for student engagement, inclusion and success as enumerated in the institutional job description include the following. The VPSEIS will:

  • Provide strategic leadership for all operational areas of the division.
  • Plan, design, and organize division goals and objectives, guide efforts toward expected outcomes, and evaluate results.
  • Hire and appropriately onboard a diverse group of professionals.
  • Assure the prompt and effective delivery of student services by monitoring workloads throughout the division and prioritizing staffing needs accordingly.
  • Provide guidance, training, mentoring, coaching, and professional development.
  • Promote teamwork and collegiality.
  • Conduct performance plans and annual evaluations according to college procedures.
  • Maximize efficiencies and effectiveness through appropriate mediums to include technology adoption, business process enhancement, talent development, etc.
  • Manage the achievement of division goals by developing effective controls to guide work effort toward expected outcomes.
  • Coordinate the annual budget and retain executive authority over all budgets within the division.
  • Plan for short and long-term needs including operating, capital, equipment, and permanent and temporary employees.
  • Oversee other projects as assigned by CEO/President.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS

A master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in student personnel administration, educational leadership, higher education administration, student development, psychology, or a related field is desired; a doctorate from a regionally accredited institution in student personnel administration, educational leadership, higher education administration, student development, psychology, or related field is preferred. Additional requirements include five years of relevant and progressively responsible administrative experience in student engagement/student development administration or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. The successful candidate must demonstrate understanding and commitment to the community college mission and purpose, teaching and learning, and student success. Further, the successful candidate must demonstrate understanding and experiences addressing practices regarding inclusivity, diversity, and equity; experience with strategic planning; ability to analyze and utilize data for decision-making; and ability to promote a welcoming environment for students, staff, faculty, and community members from diverse backgrounds and cultures. The ideal candidate must possess successful experience in resource management, development and budgeting, and experience with federal guidelines including FERPA, Clery Act, ADA, VAWA, Title IX, due process, etc. Knowledge and experience with HLC accreditation requirements and processes, experience working with a multi-location institution or related environment, and community college experience is highly desirable.

  • Skill in establishing and maintaining collaborative working relationship with all segments of the College including students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the community
  • Ability to communicate effectively and present ideas and concepts orally and in writing
  • Ability to encourage innovation and problem solving; ability to lead and manage change
  • Computer literate in MS Office Suite and experience with integrated student information systems

HISTORY OF THE POSITION

The previous VPSEIS spent four years at Aims Community College and departed from the institution in the spring of 2022. Following the departure, in the fall of 2022, Aaron Prestwich, assistant vice president of student engagement, inclusion and success was appointed interim VPSEIS and will continue to serve on an interim basis while Aims Community College conducts a national search for a permanent leader.

College stakeholders repeatedly noted that Aims Community College has an institutional culture that emphasizes a strong sense of team, mutual support, accessibility, approachability, and a highly collaborative approach to work. The vice president will find a peer group and colleagues who are welcoming, promote open communication, emphasize an orientation toward service, and share a desire for a progressive and forward-thinking professional.

The Aims Community College stakeholders seemed genuinely interested in participating in discussions about this position, and there was a sense of unity in support of identifying a competent and visionary individual who can promote and develop student engagement, inclusion, and success, set departmental priorities, and continue to boldly lead successful student and institutional initiatives into the future.

Campus stakeholders are committed to the vision of student success in every way and are dedicated to offering the best services possible. The new vice president should make it a priority to quickly get to know the staff as individuals, learn their particular needs, develop trust and confidence across the board, ascertain the services that they conduct, and be prepared to provide comprehensive professional support and oversee the ongoing development of a strong team.

The next vice president must possess a broad and deep understanding of national trends and best practices with regard to student engagement, inclusion and success, as well as an exemplary record of strong organizational and team development skills. The vice president should be an experienced, equity-minded leader capable of managing complex situations and possess an unwavering commitment to the well-being and support of students, staff, and the campus community.

The new vice president will want to quickly build rapport with the student engagement, inclusion, and success departments, colleagues throughout campus, partners, and external collaborators. The vice president should conduct a “listening tour” to foster open communication, increased transparency, opportunities for feedback, and stakeholder involvement.

As there has been turnover within the departments reporting to the vice president, campus stakeholders repeatedly emphasized the importance of the vice president being able to bring stability and consistency to the student engagement, inclusion and success team.

There is a strong desire for the new vice president to strengthen ties and be committed to a strong and collaborative relationship with academic colleagues and emphasize the educational mission of the college.

The Student Engagement, Inclusion and Success (SEIS) division at Aims Community College is composed of student affairs professionals committed to and passionate about student success. SEIS strives to support students through their academic journey holistically with departments that focus on enrollment, accessibility, financial support and literacy, academic advising, extracurricular programming, inclusion, leadership development, care and counseling, career exploration, and transfer support. Center for Diversity and Inclusion

The Center for Diversity & Inclusion (CDI) serves as a resource for Aims Community College students to build community and to learn about and advocate for issues of equity and justice. Students have many identities that influence and shape their college experience and the CDI fosters a culture of support, community, sharing, and acceptance.

Dean of Students

The Dean of Students Office provides and supports services and resources that ensure a safe, positive and accessible learning experience for students and all members of the College community.

  • Counseling Services
    • Current students are eligible to receive free, confidential counseling sessions with licensed counselors at Aims Community College.
  • Disability Access Services
    • Disability Access Services (DAS) at Aims Community College collaborates campus-wide to ensure students with disabilities have equal opportunities. DAS promotes an inclusive learning environment through information, resources, education and direct services to students, faculty and staff. DAS helps students with a documented disability receive the accommodations they need to ensure access, such as extended test time, note-taking, assistive technology, and more.
  • Student Activities, Inclusion and Leadership
    • The Student Activities, Inclusion and Leadership (SAIL) Office offers support and growth experiences through a variety of educational, social, and multicultural activities. Students can participate in student leadership activities through the Associated Students of Aims Community College.

Enrollment Management

The Enrollment Management department is responsible for strategic recruitment and enrollment management strategies for the College. The department houses College for Kids, Recruitment, and the Navigation Station. The team serves students through introduction, recruitment, and onboarding to Aims, as well as being the front-face of the Welcome Center and student support on campus.

Financial Aid

The Office of Financial Aid provides a variety of financial aid programs and services to help Aims Community College students understand and meet their educational costs.

Pathways Advising

Aims Pathway Advisors are committed to supporting students to navigate the educational system as they explore, define, and pursue their educational and career goals. Advisors guide students by clarifying college culture and related processes while assisting in the identification of a career path and discussing the appropriate academic curriculum for the student’s expressed goals.

Transitions Center

The Aims Greeley Campus Transitions Center is located on the second floor of the Welcome Center and offers resources, coaching, and experiences to help pave the way for success throughout the student’s academic journey, to graduation and beyond.

TRIO Student Support Services

The mission of TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Programs at Aims is to equip historically underrepresented student populations with skills, experiences, and academic practices to assist them in achieving their educational goals through graduation in order to become strong contributing members of society.

Leah Bornstein – CEO/President

Dr. Leah L. Bornstein has dedicated more than 30 years to higher education in various leadership and management roles. Dr. Bornstein, with degrees from Bradford College, the University of Vermont, a doctorate from the University of Denver, and an honorary doctorate from Northern Arizona University, is a prominent advocate for student success, quality instruction, and increased access to education, and vital strategic and tactical planning.

Since joining Aims Community College, Dr. Bornstein has led the College through the creation and implementation of a five-year aggressive strategic plan; continued accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission; celebrated the College’s 50th anniversary; developed new partnerships with business and industry; established Aims2UNC transition program; and supported design and construction projects including the Public Safety Institute, Applied Technology & Trades Center, Flight Training Center, Welcome Center, Student Commons, and classroom buildings to house expansion of programs such as aviation, public safety, agriculture, and commercial driver’s license (CDL).
